These two are an <i>epic</i> duo. They work together with such grace and ease. And they are downright hilarious. I love any chance I get to work with them on the magazine as one of the contributing editors, and this two-day shoot of my own house was the tippy of tops. Thanks, Robert and Brittany!<br /><br />And in even better, more exciting to me news, WE ARE HAVING A BABY! And it's another girl! :)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_6630.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda035/IMG_6630.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />We could not be a single ounce more happy about her. We've felt for years that we've wanted another (and likely final) child in our family, and after a long road of hardship there, she's finally on her way. I tear up every time I think of how sweet my older girls are being about the idea of having a little sister this January. Nearly every morning they crawl into bed with us and whisper sister secrets and sing little songs to my belly. This is the good stuff, friends. Thanks for being here to share in my joy. xo

Changes in the Music Room with Farrow & Ball

Not only was she an all around <i>delightful</i> person, she had the most amazing eye for color and so many insightful thoughts to share. We showed her our home and talked about our decor plans and our color preferences. I had been leaning toward a great color called <a href="http://us.farrow-ball.com/green-blue/colours/farrow-ball/fcp-product/100084" target="_blank">Green Blue</a>, and after lots of discussion about lighting and room functionality, Amber and I both agreed the color was the right choice for the music room.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo LGN30.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda032/LGN30.jpg" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Amber and I loved that the color was sort of a darker version of the green I had ordered for the library curtains.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo LGN53.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda032/LGN53.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">Amber was really drawn to the watercolor abstract I had been planning to hang in the music room and we both thought that the warm, bluey green would compliment the painting really well.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo LGN34.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda032/LGN34.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">She and I gushed about how pretty the green color pairs with oranges and wood tones. I had been so focused on other spaces that I hadn't even really been looking at the entry. She and I agreed that the space was begging for a pretty pattern, so we spent some additional time browsing her samples. DIY Upholstered Bench (from a Coffee Table!)

My latest Domino story is on page 52 of the summer issue and <a href="http://domino.com/jenny-komenda-coffee-table-makeover" target="_blank">HERE online</a>! Thanks for all your kind comments about the spread and for your support. I thought I would show you a little more background on the project today. We ended up shooting the story twice so I made two different versions of the tops. I'll show you the photos that Domino didn't run.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo Jenny_DIYimages-37.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/Jenny_DIYimages-37.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />I found this coffee table at the Meeker Ave Flea Market in Brooklyn. It was stamped Dorothy Draper and I got it for only $10 because it was missing a top. Total score! It does exactly what it sounds like it would do. It comes in a powder that you make a solution with water and use it to sort of clean the wood. The color lightens pretty quickly.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_1193.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/IMG_1193.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">You'll definitely want to wear gloves for this part of the show. And working in a well-ventilated place is a good idea.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo bIMG_1208.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/bIMG_1208.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">After the wood dried out, we waxed the finish and I LOVE the new color. It's still a little splotchy and dark in some places, but I like it.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo Jenny_DIYimages-3.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/Jenny_DIYimages-3.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I had some plywood cut to fit the top of the coffee table exactly at Home Depot and bought some high-density foam at Joann's with a coupon, along with some batting cut a few inches bigger than the plywood.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo Jenny_DIYimages-14.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/jkomenda010/Jenny_DIYimages-14.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">For the second try on the IKEA rug-binding, I did a tight whip stitch instead of the X's, which I think is a cleaner look. It was a cheap project and I love how I can use the bench in pretty much any space in the house. I layered it in front of a credenza <a href="http://domino.com/jenny-komenda-coffee-table-makeover" target="_blank">for the spread</a> and I've used it in our bedroom too.  We have been keeping it in the studio lately and I love the little pop of color from the thread. Vintage Daybed: FOUND

I found a vintage daybed for the library! I stalked Craigslist like crazy and found a listing for this pretty mid-century chaise only an hour or two after it had been posted. I emailed and then realized in the contact info the lister wanted to be texted or called, so I texted. And then that afternoon I started stressing and I called. I seriously felt so nuts, but that was the exact daybed I had been imagining for in front of the bookshelves! And when I finally did get a hold of the seller late that afternoon while I was at the pool with my girls, he said his phone had been ringing off the hook with offers on the daybed and that it was first come, first served. So naturally I threw on a cover up over my swimsuit, a towel on my hair, and raced down there as fast as I could.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_4427.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/IMG_4427.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />From the listing, I was thinking there was at least a 50/50 chance I'd be able to keep the existing upholstery. The seller said the "linen upholstery" was in perfect condition over the phone. Turns out it is in approaching good-ish condition, there are a few stains and a tiny hint of a musty smell. And in person the texture of the fabric reads way more "Brady Bunch" than "Belgian linen," which makes total sense, of course.<br /><a name="more"></a><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo cIMG_4434.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/cIMG_4434.jpg" /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo ccIMG_4437.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/ccIMG_4437.jpg" /></div><br />So I dug around in my fabric stash to see if I could make good use of some of my hoard. I think it just might be time for Bengal Bazaar to finally make an appearance in my own house. I've been in love with the almost-ikat, sort of Southwest-feeling (so appropriate right?) pattern for years and have been lugging around this remnant with me since we lived in Delaware!<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_4480.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/IMG_4480.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><br />It looks good on the day bed, right? (though now I'm seeing that the pattern is upside down in the photo! whoops.) I definitely still love the idea of a floral pattern, but I think this achieves a similar look, but without going full-on girly. A lot of the colors of the fabrics in these two rooms are going to get changed this month and I think the more neutral pattern is a better choice for the space.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_4482.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/IMG_4482.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo cIMG_4485.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/cIMG_4485.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: left;">I'm most happy with how it fits in the room! The base is in beautiful shape, but the legs need a little bit of scrubbing.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo vIMG_4451.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/vIMG_4451.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_4446.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/Album%2020/IMG_4446.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /></div><div><br /></div>The big bookshelf installation was postponed a week, which was a big bummer because this summer is going to be insanely busy. We're hosting a ton of family parties, showers and even a reunion here and I'm anxious to get most of the common areas done or close to it. We also have some really fun photo shoots scheduled that are only furthering the anxiety/pressure! All good things, but I'm trying to keep clear about what it is that I want for the house long-term and avoid the tendency I have sometimes to buy make-it-work stuff when I'm up against deadlines. So far I think we're doing pretty good! Getting the bookshelves in finally will be a big win, for sure. Jason ran the electrical for us this week so we can install the picture lights after the bookshelves come in. It's so funny - every time we open up the drywall I can spy two or three old beer cans from the 80s inside. The Studio Tour! (and a HUGE Give Away from Domino and Keep!)

We've been working hard to decorate my little studio space this month! It's been SO fun to finally add color to the all-white room! I have a million projects to share with you all soon (Here are the tutorials on the <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/03/diy-wide-plank-floors-made-from-plywood.html" target="_blank">DIY plywood floors</a> and the <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/03/diy-extra-tall-baseboards.html" target="_blank">baseboards</a>, in case you missed them.)<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt=" photo IMG_3223.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2019/IMG_3223.jpg" /></div><br />Just like in my home and in my client's spaces, I wanted a good mix of vintage and new furniture and accessories in this space. I had been doing a little too much vintage shopping lately (gasp! possible?!) and we needed some newer pieces to sort of brighten the look up. We have the malachite desk along the west wall and I put the just-delivered, freshly reupholstered <a href="http://littlegreennotebook.blogspot.com/2014/04/how-to-easily-remove-rust.html" target="_blank">Plycraft chair</a> just next to that. I love how it looks next to <a href="http://keep.com/tracy-accent-table-safavieh-by-jennykomenda/k/wRK3VgABBU/" target="_blank">the new Safavieh table</a>. That thing is SOLID. Seriously built to last. The table top is a beautiful piece of sparkly marble and the tapered legs are gilded iron. It's adorable and the linen upholstery is well done. I bought the IKEA knock off a couple months ago, and let me tell you, that one is complete junk in comparison. This lamp is worth every penny, just for the shade alone! It's a gorgeous statement piece. The perfect little cherry on top though is this <a href="http://keep.com/untitled-domino-prints-by-jennykomenda/k/wRLQLaABIQ/" target="_blank">Cy Twombly print</a> that I've been wanting for years now. I LOVE the colors here. I think a person's hands are so beautiful (especially really old ones and brand new baby ones! Oh, my heart!), but I'm starting to realize that my hand sculpture collection is getting a little out of control at this point. Those <a href="http://keep.com/s-chair-white-zuo-modern-by-jennykomenda/k/wRM4-lABDK/" target="_blank">white S chairs</a> were originally going sit at the malachite desk and one or both of the leopard chairs were going to sit at my desk, but I decided I liked the white S chairs in a pair at my desk instead. When people come over, we all sit together here, and the girls come up and sit with me if I need to work after they get home from school. They color and I type away. </div><br /><img alt=" photo IMG_3111.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2019/IMG_3111.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I painted the base of that Widdicomb table with chalkboard paint and I love the ultra-matte finish. And remember this little guy? My <a href="http://keep.com/brass-colored-pencil-set-jayson-home-by-jennykomenda/k/wRLEBjgBFA/" target="_blank">brass colored pencil holder</a> has a star spot on my desk top now. I love it.</div><br /><br /><img alt=" photo IMG_3129.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2019/IMG_3129.jpg" style="text-align: start;" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">I picked up the gray wool office chair at a thrift store and it is so, so comfortable. It's cleaned up pretty well, but I think it's going to get a little more love sometime soon. The wooden arms and base need some work. But for now, it's just about my favorite place to sit and the arms hit the table at just the right spot. The perfect fit.</div><br /><img alt=" photo IMG_3074.jpg" border="0" src="http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd246/jkomenda/ALBUM%2019/IMG_3074.jpg" /><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">There are still a few more projects we're working on (some giant inspiration boards!!), but I'm so happy with the progress in here. It's bright and cheerful and it feels finished, but not overloaded. There's tons of floor space for spreading out our projects, but also places to sit and work when we're just doing computer work. I am so happy and grateful for this studio space.
